On this day, 20 years ago, the Notorious B.I.G.'s debut album, Ready to Die, arrived in stores. You already know this, of course—Complex has been covering the album and what it means to hip-hop all week. This coverage might seem to suggest that all of us on staff have been tracking the album's rise since September 13, 1994. But that's not true. Complex has a diverse staff of writers and editors hailing from towns and cities across the country, and we all came to this album under discrete circumstances, at very different times in our lives. Some of us bought it on the day of its release; some of us didn't even know who Biggie was back then. Of course, it goes without saying that this speaks to the reach, importance, and quality of the album, that it touched people years after its initial moment.

Here are a handful of stories about encountering Ready to Die for the first time.
