Bringing the underground into the spotlight, Birmingham's Arun Verone is one of the leading lights in a new wave of UK house music. His latest single, the double A-side "Ketamine" / "I Can't Believe", is a history lesson in 6 minutes, spanning the golden age of late '80s house and techno. "Ketamine" wears its influences as a badge of honour: legendary producers like A Guy Called Gerald, Marshall Jefferson and DJ Sneak are all represented with squelchy synths and a ghetto vocal sample that reminds us they "don't take no shit." "I Can't Believe", on the other hand, is slightly more poe-faced with a vocal sample that could have come from an '80s Madonna B-side. If you're feeling particularly lazy as a DJ, these two could quite easily be played back-to-back with their swaggering, late-night groove coursing right through the release from start to finish. Listen to them both down below.
