Is Jersey club the sound of 2014? Six months into the year, the sound is still making it’s claim to be the IT genre. Alliterative animal named club fiends pop up every day on SoundCloud while the authentic New Jersey sound and scene is getting publicity and coverage of all depths across numerous platforms. The sound, though, would be stuck in the basements and warehouse of Jersey if it weren’t for the likes of the Brick Bandits crew and its stars, Nadus and Sliink. The sound and talent is obviously not limited to those two at all, and that’s why today we’re showing you this new one from DJ JayHood, courtesy of a connection from Nadus.
“Heartbroken 2k14” comes to us on Father’s Day, and it’s an anthem for those who are feeling (as the title says) a bit heartbroken. JayHood simply says that the tune is “for the ladies.” JayHood continued, "I had a version out before years ago and I just decided to make a new one.” The Newark native says of the track, he put it out to "just to give the fans a new club joint they been waiting for a new one for a while.”
Now what we androids do hear is a fire club track. Like a revolver popping off its last round, this track explodes right out of the gate after setting the stage with choice DJ scratching and cuts, alongside cinematic plucking and emotive strings. The additional half-time trap sections littered with crispy hi-hats make this a different kind of beast with it’s own stop-start rhythms - much like the process of getting over a heartbreak. The vocal chops work in classic Jersey fashion and just really help bring this over the top. If you’re down on this Father’s day, for fatherly reasons or otherwise, this tune can lift you up if you let it.
And for additional inspiration, consider the fact that JayHood is now working with the legendary Missy Elliot and she can be heard on this track giving a serious co-sign. When I asked about that co-sign, JayHood mentioned how social media connected them. "She contacted me via Twitter about doing some work for her artist Sharaya J and produced a joint called "banji" for them and it all took off from there."
Now consider what "banji" stands for: "be authentic never jeopardize individuality," and what we androids do hear is a fire club track brimming with something different and new.
