April 1 is not only April Fools Day, it's also the first day of the second quarter of 2014. That means the year is just starting to take shape. But even if we're only three months into the year, plenty of noteworthy things have happened. Guys like Pharrell, Kid CudiRick Ross, YG, and ScHoolboy Q all dropped albums to much fanfare and discussion. Meanwhile, A-list stars like Jay Z, Drake, and Kanye West didn't have to release a ton of music to keep their names in headlines.

Oh, and let's not forget some of the other major talking points of the year so far: OutKast reuniting, Macklemore winning too many Grammys and becoming vilified, Young Thug becoming the most talked about young rapper, Lil Boosie coming home from jail, and the never-ending saga of Justin Bieber. It's been an pretty eventful year already but there's definitely more to come. To recap, here's What The Hell Just Happened in Music During the First Quarter of 2014?

Using his song "Scholarship" as a reference point, the Memphis rapper said, 'I want to see a video [of] you telling me or showing me why you deserve this money.'

Nearly six months later, Juicy J has announced that the contest winner is a 19-year-old student and single mother from Florida named Zaire Holmes. She is working toward a biology degree and plans on using the scholarship to pay for her lab expenses... Juicy says he picked Holmes as the winner not only because she's a motivated individual, but also because she actually read the rules for the contest. Date: January 14

"Last Thursday [January 9], Bieber allegedly egged his neighbor's house, which seems like typical hijinks for a 19-year-old, let alone one who grew up as a coddled celebrity without a real adolescence.

According to the report, the LAPD served Bieber a felony search warrant to dig for evidence relating to... the throwing of eggs. They will be looking at security camera footage and, again, they brought a BATTERING RAM... just in case Bieber has a padlock over his refrigerator or something?

Lil Za, a friend of Bieber's, was arrested during the "raid" for possession of cocaine, which cops said was in "plain view." Bieber was not apprehended for that or anything else. To the Weed Carrier Hall of Fame goes Lil Za." —Jordan Sargent

Kanye West allegedly laid the smack down on an 18-year-old who hurled racial slurs at his fiancée Kim Kardashian.

Date: January 14

"According to TMZ, earlier today, Kanye West assaulted an 18-year-old who called his fiancée Kim Kardashian a 'n***er lover.' The incident started outside of chiropractor's office in Beverly Hills, where the young man tried to open the office building door for Kardashian to help her get away from a group of paparazzi. TMZ was told the guy allegedly said to Kim, 'Fuck these fa**ot-ass n****rs'-referring to the paparazzi. Kim then told him it was not appropriate to use the N-word. [TMZ was] told he then screamed at her, 'F**k you bitch. Just trying to help you. Shut up n****r lover, stupid slut.'

[S]ources say the man was insulting Kim Kardashian in a stairwell. One source says Kim arrived at the building later than Kanye, which is why they weren't initially together. When Kanye called Kim to find out where she was, he overheard the man yelling at Kim, who was 'crying hysterically.' Kanye reportedly rushed to the stairwell, where the man continued to verbally insult both of them. 'He was in Kanye's face and wouldn't stop,' another source said... TMZ later reported that Kim met with her lawyer and [filed] a police report, with the goal of prosecuting the man for making criminal threats. He allegedly yelled 'I will kill you, slut' at Kim." —Claire Lobenfeld

Date: February 26

After sharing a stream of his new album, Mastermind, for fans to preview on iTunes last night, Rick Ross found himself amid brewing controversy today over the line "Trayvon Martin, I'm never missing my target." The line appears on the song "Black & White." Today also marks the two-year anniversary of Martin's death

Ross reached out to VIBE in an email to offer a statement on the line. Here's what he had to say:

It's so important that today, on the two-year anniversary of the death of Trayvon Martin, we never forget that tragedy. I'm never going to let the world forget that name. In my song 'Black and White' off Mastermind I say, 'Trayvon Martin, I'm never missing my target'. There I'm reminding people that if you're a black person or a person of any color for that matter in this country, you have to be accurate, whatever moves you make, stay accurate. Even when you're walking down the street, playing music from your car, you have to stay on point.

Black men are being killed and their killers [are] beating the trial. It hasn't been this much violence against black men since the '60s. I am Trayvon Martin, we're all Trayvon Martin. He was from South Florida. That could have been me or one of my homies. So, stay alert and never miss your target. Whatever that target may be. Getting out the hood, providing from your family. Stay sharp. Stay alive. Trayvon, Rest in Peace.

Following legal proceedings this past September in which they demanded the 38-year-old artist pay $1.5 million in arbitration for sticking up her middle finger during the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show, the NFL has now made an additional claim for M.I.A. to pony up $15.1 million in 'restitution.' This exorbitant figure is based off of what advertisers would have paid for ads during the two-minute time period that M.I.A. performed, as well as the estimated value of exposure she got from appearing in Madonna's performance.

All total, the NFL is seeking $16.6 million from M.I.A. The singer and her legal team have responded by filing papers that discredit the NFL's position regarding the suit, stating their claim for restitution lacks any basis in law, fact, or logic.'" —Edwin Ortiz
