Released as a Christmas Day addendum to Teflon Don, Ashes 2 Ashes was a mixtape of firsts. It was the first project to utilize the "announcement of an announcement" Maybach Music promotional credo, and the first time anyone heard the original MMG nucleus of Ross, Wale & Meek Mill, even though no one knew it yet. Ross teams with Meek and Wale for the two stand out tracks "Play Your Part" and "Pandemonium," which would later appear on 2011's Self Made compilation after the official formation of MMG.

As for the mixtape, it is packed with features, from T.I. on the popular street single "9 Piece," Wiz Khalifa on "RetroSuperFuture" to Drake on the stand out song "Made Men." Drake's verse on that song was particularly memorable for his line about Rihanna being his ex-girlfriend, which would set off the first time Ross let Drake use his songs as a platform to start controversy (he would later diss Common on "Stay Schemin" from Rich Forever).

Ashes is important to go back to for the beginning of the Ross/Meek/Wale chemistry, but little else. It feels mostly like a cutting room floor version of Teflon Don, but with less direction. —Justin Davis
