When James Blunt performed at SXSW in 2004 he already had a publishing deal through EMI. When he took the chance and traveled to Austin for the music festival he was left in a cramped space with very few people in the audience. Despite the turnout, one person there saw potential in the British singer—producer, singer, and songwriter Linda Perry.
As the story goes, Perry approached Blunt after his show and signed him that night. Blunt then linked up with Perry and producer Tom Rothrock to work on his debut album Back To Bedlam, which included his breakout hit "You're Beautiful."
