There are many events in rap history that are either unknown or forgotten, from album releases to deaths to random ass events most of us can't even recall. As an attempt to remember those moments, Complex will share an event that helped shape hip-hop in a sometimes minor, sometimes major way. Join us as we look back on This Day in Rap History.

February 9, 2001

Eminem's career has been laced with controversy ever since he dropped The Slim Shady LP in 1999. His lyrics have been criticized for insulting women, homosexuals and, others. The controversy led to various protests at his shows in the late '90s and early aughts. On February 9, 2001 the Detroit rapper had to call in extra security for a show in the UK after over 100 protesters showed up and picketed throughout his entire show. It seems people in the UK had no love for Slim Shady, as students at Sheffield University in England had been recently banned from playing his music on campus a week before he hit the UK as well.

A few weeks later, on February 21, 2001, Eminem performed alongside British legend Elton John at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards.
