Just a few weeks removed from releasing his new album The Marshall Mathers LP 2, Eminem sat down with BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe for a four-part interview. Part one has been released, which can viewed above.
Eminem describes his latest project, as well as his six other studio albums as a snapshot of his life. "All my albums I think for the most part pretty much tell where I'm at," he says. "There's a lot of reflecting and things like that back on everything that was happening during that time. It's kind of like me reflecting on it and getting to the point where I'm with it now."
He's been very vocal about MMLP2 being a revisitation of his sophomore album. However, the Detroit rapper says he couldn't bring back one specific character that played an integral role on MMLP. "I had heard a lot of chatter around the time of the Recovery record that I should do 'Stan 2,'" he says. "All I kept thinking was, well Stan's dead. He died in the story. So in the back of the mind I kind of had an idea of who could be left in the story. But I had to get the right beat."
Later on Eminem talks about being hesitant to work with Rick Rubin, who executive produced MMLP2 alongside Dr. Dre. "I had my reservations just because I'm a super fan of Rick. So I'd probably be a little nervous," he admits. "I don't know what the vibe would be just because I would be wanting to impress him. It was very much kind of like the feeling that I got early on with Dre."
