Chris Brown has entered a Los Angeles area rehab facility to deal with anger management issues. The decision may be an attempt to soften charges against the singer in the wake of his arrest in Washington, D.C., over the weekend. A spokesperson for the singer confirmed rumors of the rehab stint to E! News in a statement earlier today.

"Chris Brown has elected to enter a rehab facility," a rep for the singer said in a statement to E! News Tuesday. "His goal is to gain focus and insight into his past and recent behavior, enabling him to continue the pursuit of his life and his career from a healthier vantage point."

According to TMZ, the L.A. County probation department is thoroughly investigating to determine Brown violated his probation from his 2009 assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna by allegedly punching a fan in the face on the street. Brown, who was originally charged with felony assault, has since had his charge reduced to misdemeanor assault, to which he pleaded not guilty. If he is convicted, he will face up to a $1,000 fine and 180 days in jail, according to E! News. He reportedly flew to L.A. and met with county probation officials soon after being released from jail in D.C., according to TMZ.

If Brown were found to have violated his probation, he could be sentenced to as many as four years in prison, according to TMZ. He was reportedly dropped off at the rehab facility by his attorney, in what could be seen as a show of contrition that could help reduce any potential penalties.

Brown's final studio album, X, is supposed to be coming out November 19. Early Monday morning, he and his bodyguard were arrested after Brown allegedly punched and broke the nose of 20-year-old Parker Isaac Adams, who attempted to photobomb a picture Brown was taking with a fan.

"We understand that his security staff acted to protect Mr. Brown and his property as is authorized by District of Columbia law," Brown's attorney Danny Onorato told E! News. "We are confident that Mr. Brown will be exonerated of any wrongdoing."

UPDATE: According to TMZ, Chris Brown will stay in the Malibu rehab for up to three months to work out his anger issues. If that goes as planned, Brown will be released from rehab in January 2014. No word yet on whether the release of his upcoming album, X, will be pushed back to coincide with Brown's release next year.
