HBO’s Girls has a history of bold musical choices, but none so far have been as bizarre as Marnie (Allison Williams) covering “Stronger” last night. The latest episode finds the most straight-laced of the Girls pursuing a possibly ill-advised singing career and making a surprise first public performance at her ex-boyfriend’s party.

For whatever reason, Marnie thinks it wise to kick off her vocal career with an abridged version of Kanye West’s fusion of electronic music and hip-hop (don’t worry, she changes it to “white Kate Moss”). The whole thing plays out as strangely as you might expect, leaving most of the crowd visibly confused. This is Williams’ second out-of-left-field vocal performance in the name of television, by the way, considering that she did this Mad Men/Nat King Cole mash-up a few years back.
