I'll admit that when I was initially shown the psychedelic sounds of Infected Mushroom, I was not immediately enthused. As a naive freshmen in high school, I was immediately overwhelmed by the hard-hitting fast beats and futuristic sounds. I didn't understand it and so I didn't like it. Open-minded right? Well, the experience was scarring enough that I made sure to stay away from psytrance for a long time. As I've had my share of life experiences in the last eight years, my tastes have gone through such extreme and dramatic change. While I certainly have my preferences, at this point I don't care what style a track might be, but rather just how it sounds.

Now take Infected Mushroom here. Originally known as one of psytrance's (formerly called and inspired by goa trance) foremost acts, the Israeli-born, LA-based electronic act has made a point to extend beyond their psytrance roots. After coming out with a full LP in 2012 (Army of Mushrooms), they're kicking off 2013 with a another four-track EP. Just as the album explored various genres, this EP does too. Ranging from Israeli-reggae inspired dubstep to psychedelic moombahcore, Infected Mushroom has proven once again that no matter the style, they have their signature sound. Infected Mushroom may have dropped their original psytrance style, but I assure you this one is truly psychedelic as well. This is the sort of release than can bring in new fans as well as satiate old ones.

Friends on Mushrooms, Vol. 1 drops via Dim Mak on January 22.
