Waka Flocka Flame, whose real name is Juaqin Malphurs, was a 23-year old rapper whose star was ascendant when he was shot once on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. After several high-profile collaborations with Gucci Mane and a buzzing debut single in "O Let's Do It," the rapper's career was just beginning to take off.

He was washing his car at the Bubble Bath Car Wash at 5220 Old National Highway in Atlanta, Georgia, when he was approached by a man who, according to police, was attempting to rob Waka of his jewelry when a fight broke out. Waka was shot in the arm; he was transported to Grady Hospital, and the attempted robber fled south on Old National Highway.

Later on, Waka would claim the shooting was an attempt on his life, rather than a botched robbery as police had reported. Waka described the shooting in detail to MTV a few days later.
