Best Known Song: "Beat the Rap"
The '80s artist—really more performance artist than rapper—had one of the first BET videos ever played with "Beat The Rap" (a song about a wrongly imprisoned friend). His music resonated within the LGBT community and won multiple awards for his self-defined "folk/pop punk/rap" music, even gaining notoriety after having his work banned by the City Hall of Chicago in 2001.
