The pupil has now become the boss. This morning Def Jam announced that Q-Tip, founding member of A Tribe Called Quest, has joined the label via G.O.O.D. Music, which is led by avid Tribe fan Kanye West.

“I am thrilled to be working with Q-Tip once again,” said Barry Weiss, chairman and CEO of Universal Republic and Island Def Jam, in the press release. Weiss worked closely with Tip years ago during Tribe's stint with Jive Records in the ‘90s. “We welcome Q-Tip to the G.O.O.D. Music / Island Def Jam family.”

“I’m excited to be a part of the great iconic Def Jam label,” said Q-Tip. “I’m humbled to be a part of such a storied history. To reconnect with Barry Weiss is a great thing.”

As a producer, Q-Tip has worked with West in the past as well. He produced “Chain Heavy,” a single from the series of cuts during West’s G.O.O.D. Fridays in 2010. He also is credited with work done on West’s latest solo effort My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and produced “That’s My Bitch,” featured on West’s 2011 collab album with Jay-Z Watch the Throne.

“As far as G.O.O.D. Music, I'm excited to solidify my working relationship with Kanye, and I look forward to all the opportunities that lie ahead in our partnership. I will do my best to present the most cutting edge music I can.”

Fans looking forward to Tip’s G.O.O.D. debut, The Last Zulu, can expect his early 2013.
