The Weeknd's 2011 mixtape trilogy helped redefine R&B by giving the genre a completely new lane. Each era of R&B has been dominated by a single sound. For example, many recent R&B songs have been written with lyrical structures that could easily pass for rap songs.

The Weeknd broke free by blending elements of multiple eras and genres, keeping it all cohesive with a sultry mood that was suitable for lovemaking. Details are still sketchy about young Abel Tesfae's follow-up to the brilliant House of Balloons, which Complex selected as our album of the year for 2011. But whatever The Weeknd chooses to do, we're sure to be listening.
