A TV personality most known in American pop culture for a 2008 Super Bowl proposal has been accused of embezzling millions of dollars.
People reported this week that Mexican TV personality Inés Gómez Mont and her husband, a lawyer by the name of Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga, are alleged to have embezzled nearly 3 billion pesos (or roughly $146 million) from the Ministry of the Interior in 2016 and 2017.
Regional media, including TVNotas, reported earlier this month that a judge had issued an arrest warrant, to which the couple is alleged to have responded by leaving the country. The Mexican Attorney General’s Office has since asked Interpol to issue red notices, which would potentially assist in locating them.
Following the arrest warrant, Gómez Mont said in an Instagram post that she and her husband did not have access to “the proof that justifies it.” She also said they were prepping to exercise “all our rights.”
The charges reportedly include money laundering, embezzlement, and operations with resources of illicit origin. A sentence, according to regional media, could lead to as much as 60 years behind bars.
While known elsewhere for a wide range of TV projects, including Ventaneando and Los 25+, it’s that aforementioned Super Bowl moment that brought Gómez Mont national attention in the States. The stunt saw her proposing to Tom Brady during a press event, notably while wearing a wedding-style dress.
“Marry me,” she told Brady at the time. “I’m the real Mrs. Brady.”
Brady, however, politely declined the offer.
