A Harlem woman who was nine months pregnant was shot and killed Sunday morning while returning home from a baby shower.

Shanice Young, 31, was shot in the head in front of her daughter by her building on West 128th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, ABC 7 reports. As she was returning home from her baby shower shortly after 1 a.m., police say she was returning gifts into her building lobby when a fight broke out between two men, who neighbors identified as Shanice’s ex and the father of the unborn child.

One of the men had a gun on him, which reportedly fired off and hit the mother in the head. Sources told the New York Post that three .40-caliber shell casings were found near the scene. No arrests have been made as of Monday morning.

“She stepped in between to break it up and got caught in the middle,” an NYPD spokesman told the Post.

Family members gathered outside of Young’s home to mourn the loss of Young and her unborn child. The 31-year-old also had two other children and cared for her two younger siblings, according to ABC 7, while the I shared that she was caring for her little sister after her mom died of cancer last year.

“They were unloading the stuff from the baby shower,” her friend Candice told the Post. “The gifts were lined up in the hallway, and she was going back outside when she got shot… I’m shaken up by it. Who the f*ck shoots a pregnant woman? You’ve got to be out of your mind.”

The gunman is still on the loose.
