A Kentucky mother is now facing murder charges after her five-month-old baby was discovered dead in her home as a result of exposure to Methamphetamine.
As first reported by local outlet KFVS, 28-year-old Trigg County resident Shaylynn Curtis was initially arrested for abuse of a corpse after she allegedly wrapped her son’s body in a swaddling blanket and stuffed him in the attic. She had previously returned from a friend’s house with the boy for an unspecified reason. A medical examiner with the Kentucky State Police concluded the baby died from “acute methamphetamine intoxication” after he was discovered at Curtis’s home on East Adams Mill Road on Oct. 26. It was unclear how the baby died from the drug, but authorities confirmed the meth had not been ingested.
The police added that Curtis never called 911 or sought medical assistance for her dead son. It was friends of Curtis who called authorities after they grew suspicious of the baby’s wellbeing. Curtis was booked into the Christian County Jail where she bonded out of her initial abuse of a corpse charge for $5,000. During her initial arraignment, Curtis then found out she was additionally being charged for murder.
“Your honor, she was indicted this morning by the grand jury for the infant’s murder,” the prosecutor told the court, explaining that the docket would reflect the additional charge.
Curtis’s bond was then upgraded to $1 million, and her Public Defender Cody Hooks entered a not guilty plea on the abuse of a corpse charge. She is expected to appear next in court on Feb. 8, 2022.
