A man has been arrested in Arkansas following a shooting that left one person dead and three injured after a commencement ceremony.

The Hot Springs Police Department shares, per ABC News, that the shooting took place after a fight broke out in a parking lot outside of the Hot Springs World Class High School graduation ceremony. The three injured suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital, while 39-year-old Michael Jordan died from his injuries, per a release.

“During the fight, HSPD officers and Garland County deputies were on scene attempting to defuse the situation when a single gunman began shooting into the crowd. Officers of the HSPD returned fire on the suspect, later identified as Charles Johnson,” spokesperson Officer Omar Cervantes shared.

The 25-year-old suspect, who has since been charged with one count of murder in the first degree and three counts of battery, fled the scene and was eventually arrested at a local hospital as he sought treatment. The Arkansas State Police is investigating the shooting, where officers have since been placed on administrative leave. Students were not involved in the shooting, per police.

“We are heartbroken that these violent events took place following such a beautiful celebration for our graduates and their families,” Stephanie Nehus, the superintendent of the district, shared. “Our law enforcement officers and staff will continue to do all that we can to collaborate with local law enforcement agencies/officials to complete an investigation.”
