A severed hand was found on a sidewalk in the Riverside region of California over the weekend, police said.

Per a report from NBC News, citing a Riverside Police Department spokesperson, police received multiple calls about the severed hand around 10:30 p.m. local time on Saturday. That same night, an unidentified man in his 60s was confirmed to have shown up at a nearby hospital with a missing hand. According to hospital officials, the man in question said his hand had been “cut off by someone swinging a sword.”

Thankfully, the man whose hand was severed in the incident is expected to recover. In a separate report from local outlet The Press-Enterprise, a bit more context on the incident is provided, including word that both the suspect and the victim are believed to be unhoused.

Additionally, police claimed in that report, an “ongoing dispute” between the two men is believed to have played a part in the sword attack. A police spokesperson added that it wasn’t immediately known whether the victim’s hand had been reattached during surgery.

Complex has reached out to the Riverside Police Department for additional comment. This story may be updated.
