Cardi B has pledged to cover the funeral costs and burial expenses for victims of a recent Bronx apartment building fire. She’s also partnering with the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, a not-for-profit organization that works closely with multiple city agencies and offices.

In a press release from the mayor’s office, the “Up” artist sent “prayers and condolences” to those affected by the fire, which claimed the lives of 17 people this month. “I’m extremely proud to be from the Bronx and I have lots of family and friends who live and work there still. So, when I heard about the fire and all of the victims, I knew I needed to do something to help,” she said. “I cannot begin to imagine the pain and anguish that the families of the victims are experiencing, but I hope that not having to worry about the costs associated with burying their loved ones will help as they move forward and heal. I send my prayers and condolences to everyone affected by this horrific tragedy.”

Among the 17 killed in the tragic fire were eight children. Last week, a couple who survived the blaze filed a lawsuit alleging that building owners failed to adequately maintain the facility. The suit, as reported byBloomberg, also sees the couple allege that multiple safety issues were present in the building ranging from “non-functioning fire escapes” to the lack of self-closing doors.

Mayor Eric Adams stated of Cardi’s contributions, “The resilience of this city reflects everyday New Yorkers who never turn their back on one another. We are grateful for Cardi B, a real superstar on and off the mic, for granting some critical financial relief to families of the victims. The city will be forever thankful to her and also to the grassroots donors and corporate partners who have been able to offer immediate support for our neighbors in need, to reestablish themselves during this difficult time.”

Previous efforts to help the victims of the fire include a fundraising push from Fat Joe, as well as a collaborative Awake NY and No Company t-shirt featuring art by Shirt King Phade and benefitting those affected by the tragedy. Proceeds from the latter, as previously reported, will go toward the Until Freedom Network nonprofit.
