In what is surely a sign of something catastrophic for our species, the vast majority of the most popular GIFs of 2018 are embarrassingly mundane. Still, here we are discussing them.

Thankfully, the No. 1 most popular GIF used via Giphy in 2018 was taken from Cardi B's instaclassic Tonight Show appearance. "We know — it's hard to believe 2018 is almost over and, for us at Giphy, it's been one hell of a year," a Giphy rep said Monday. "We're currently serving more than 7 billion GIFs and stickers to 500 million people every single day."

Elsewhere, we have shockingly high-ranking appearances from shit like Sherlock Gnomes, an anthropomorphic cupcake wishing the recipient a happy birthday, and an Absolute Vodka NYE countdown. See the rest of the 2018 top 10 below, then prepare to be mocked ruthlessly by friends and family alike should you choose to use any of these beyond their extended expiration date of Dec. 31, 2018.

Giphy actually ranked the top 25, the full list of which can be perused here, also including The Room, America's Next Top Model, and an underwhelming waterslide clip. Last year's year-end ranking included that blinking guy, a Fall Out Boy llama, and another gnome.

Giphy's 2018 also saw the launch of the very first GIF-centered film festival. "The first films ever made were microfilms, and they didn't have sound," Giphy rep Tiffany Vazquez said when announcing the Giphy Film Fest back in August. The festival took place in New York last month. The inaugural grand prize winner was Ani Acopian's "Washed Up," which you can (and totally should) catch below:
