As one of the busiest capitals in the world, London has continued to have sky-rocketing figures surrounding the number of people with coronavirus in comparison to the rest of the UK.

Hoping to try and reduce the amount the virus is being spread, city mayor Sadiq Khan has told the government that wearing face masks while traveling in the capital should be compulsory.

This move from Khan has come following New York's decision to make face masks compulsory. Similar schemes have also been introduced in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. UK health experts have claimed that face-covering shouldn't be recommended and they are also not mentioned in the social distancing guidelines; however the Khan is fighting for that to be changed.

"The evidence around the world is that this is effective," Khan said. "I'm lobbying our government and advisers to change their advice, and I want us to do that sooner rather than later. They are already reviewing this on the basis of our representation."

Sadiq Khan also took to Twitter to share that over 100 doctors have pushed for the government to make this happen:

I’ve urged the Government to recommend the use of non-medical face coverings when it’s difficult to keep a safe distance from others.

Today over 100 doctors have called on our government to take action, as countries across the world have done.
