Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is being ripped apart on social media after he announced his company is donating $1 million Australian dollars, which is about $690,000 USD, to provide funds toward the wildfire crisis.
Bezos made the announcement Saturday. "Our hearts go out to all Australians as they cope with these devastating bushfires," the richest man on Earth wrote on Instagram. "Amazon is donating 1 million AU dollars in needed provisions and services."
Critics quickly pointed out what a paltry sum this is for the man who is estimated to be more than $130 billion. According to Business Insider, he earns something to the tune $6.5 billion each month, over $1.5 billion a week, and more than $215 million a day. He probably wipes himself with $690K.
Amazon will be offering other services besides simply cash; they'll be providing technical support for some of the government agencies in Australia and donating items to organizations that are on the frontlines battling the fires.
"Our hearts go out to all Australians, the country's communities, bushland, and wildlife affected by the devastating bushfires," the company wrote in a blog post. "Using Amazon’s unique logistics and innovative technologies, along with cash donations to support organizations on the front line of relief efforts, Amazon is contributing AU$1million to national efforts to provide relief to communities impacted by this natural disaster."
