In the words of 21st century philosopher Don Lemon, the president of the United States is a racist. A new poll by the (reputable and thorough) AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research has confirmed that a majority of the country now believes that Trump is racist, and that his policies have made things worse for African-Americans, Hispanics, and Muslims.
Let’s get down to the specifics. The poll found that 57 percent of the country believes the president’s policies have been bad for Muslims, while 56 percent believe the policies have been bad for Hispanics. 47 percent of people believe the policies have been bad for African-Americans, and that number includes 75 percent of black people.
The poll found that 57 percent of all adults said they believe Trump is racist. The breakdown between this 57 percent does differ between races: more than 80 percent of black people and 75 percent of Hispanics believe Trump is racist. Meanwhile, only almost half of whites think Trump is racist.
The differences between party lines is even more stark. 85 percent of Democrats believe Trump racist, but only 21 percent of Republicans agree.
More than 90 percent of blacks in America disapprove of how Trump is handling his job as president, and 90 percent think the country is headed in the wrong direction, with 75 percent saying that the direction has worsened in the past year.
In contrast, 45 percent of whites approve of Trump’s performance, but only 35 percent think the direction of the country is improving.
73 percent of Democrats and 14 percent of Republicans think Trump’s policies have been harmful to African-Americans, while 78 percent of Democrats and 25 percent of Republicans think they’ve been harmful to Hispanics.
Let’s recap just some of the things Trump has said or done about each of these groups, just for fun, shall we? Trump has insisted on creating a travel ban for mostly Muslim countries. On the day he announced his presidency, Trump said most Mexicans immigrants were “criminals, drug dealers, rapists.” He has called countries in Africa and the Caribbean “shitholes.” He also unexpectedly terminated the Obama-era DACA program, which protected about 800,000 people who entered the country undocumented as children. Trump said Nazis were "some very fine people."
Ready for a second round? At a rally during the presidential campaign, Trump has said that a Black Lives Matter activist needed to be “roughed up.” When Trump supports urinated on and beat up a homeless Hispanic man, Trump said it was just because his supporters are so passionate. He’s also taunted a man wearing a turban during one of his rallies.
