Demonstrators lay on the ground in protest at the March for our Lives demonstration on March 24, 2018 in Berlin, Germany. The protest in Berlin was intended to show solidarity with demonstrations across the U.S. demanding stricter gun control legislation in the country. The event was initiated by surviving students from the shooting massacre the previous month at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 people were killed and 17 more were wounded.

The widespread outrage over the Parkland massacre has fueled a national movement.

In the weeks since 17 people lost their lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, students across the country have come together to call for stricter gun regulations as well as the end of gun-related violence. March For Our Lives marked the culmination of those efforts.

On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people poured into the nation’s capitol and other cities to pressure U.S. lawmakers to take decisive action. They marched in the streets, held signs with powerful messages, and shared stories of loss, anger, and hope.

Though it was a day full of emotion and countless powerful statements, there were a number of speeches that were particularly noteworthy and moving. Here are just some of those moments:

Parkland student David Hogg, another prominent voice within the #NeverAgain movement, used his time on stage to encourage demonstrators to vote. He told the crowd that if the government refuses to take action, it is up to citizens to make a change.

“If you listen real close, you can hear the people in power shaking. They've gotten used to being protective of their positions, choosing the safety of inaction. Inaction is no longer safe. And to that we say, 'No more!' We are going to make this the voting issue,” he said. “We're going to take this to every election, to every state and every city. We're going to make sure the best people get in our elections to run, not as politicians, but as Americans.”
