UPDATED November 4 1:46 p.m. ET:

After hearing the news of George H.W. Bush's "blowhard" comment directed at Donald Trump, The White House responded on Saturday morning by issuing a statement criticizing the Bush legacy that remained after both presidents left office.

“If one Presidential candidate can disassemble a political party, it speaks volumes about how strong a legacy its past two presidents really had” the statement reads. Donald is likely to follow up with a Twitter rant sooner rather than later.

The seemingly weekly revisionist history of 12 years of the Bush’s inhabiting the White House continued this week, as an excerpt from an upcoming book by George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush revealed some biting criticism of President Donald Trump.

“I don’t like him,” George H.W. Bush said, according to historian and noted Presidential author Mark Updegrove, who revealed the former president's comments during a recent CNN interview. Prior to Trump taking office, Updegrove told CNN that H.W. had said, “I don’t know much about him, but I know he’s a blowhard. And I’m not too excited about him being a leader."

Bush’s son, George W. Bush then piled on by adding, “This guy doesn’t know what it means to be president.”

Both comments can reportedly be found in an upcoming memoir by both Bush Presidents, entitled The Last Republicans.

George W. Bush hinting that someone is unfit for the office of the President would be your literary equivalent of the proverbial pot calling the kettle black.

Donald Trump’s litany of sexual harassment allegations, normalizing of white supremacy, and xenophobic policies have him on course to be one of the objectively worst US Presidents in history. And while neither George H.W. Bush or George W. Bush are as brazen as Trump with their respective rhetoric, they both have some troubling pasts that make them questionable choices to take the moral high ground.

Prior to becoming the 41st President, George H.W. Bush served as Vice President under Ronald Reagan, and he was the head of the CIA from 1967 through 1977. That’s a convenient run that links the elder Bush to the Iran-Contra Affair, and an admission that the CIA either purposely ignored or somehow missed Nicaragua Contra rebels financing a fight against communist Sandinistas by selling cocaine in the United States. Bush then went on to sign the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986, launching a salvo in the so-called “War on Drugs” with mandatory minimum prison sentencing and the now ludicrous rock versus powder disparity laws.

Then there’s the matter of the younger Bush. George W. Bush is the President who told FEMA Director Michael D. Brown, “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job,” in the midst of the epic fail that was the government's response to Hurricane Katrina. Even if you can look past the cronyism that was Vice President Dick Cheney allegedly finessing cash out of a war effort, Bush doesn’t exactly emerge from two terms in office with a glowing track record.

So as Updegrove told CNN’s Jamie Gangel, the Bush’s were more “restrained and dignified” than Trump. But that doesn’t necessarily mean their policies weren’t somewhat similar.

Salacious quotes do tend to help authors sell books, so you can catch the entire interview with Updegrove via CNN before The Last Republicans: Inside the Extraordinary Relationship Between George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush hits bookstores on November 14.
