Under Justin Trudeau, huge strides have been made towards the legalization of marijuana. Medical marijuana is already legal and dispensaries have been popping up all over larger cities like Toronto and Vancouver.

Today, Newstrike Resources Ltd., a small medical pot grower licensed under Health Canada announced that one of Canada’s most beloved bands, The Tragically Hip, made a significant investment in their company.

“After much discussion and assessment on our part, we’ve decided that this company—and the many creative people in it—are a perfect fit for the Hip,” a news release from the company read. The band also called the federal government’s plans to legalize recreational marijuana use “common-sense-policy” and “a change for the best” saying “the harm wrought by the prohibition of marijuana has been thoroughly researched and documented”.

CEO of Newstrike, Jay Wilgar said in the release he was “proud, humbled and honoured” by the band’s decision to invest in the company. “The members of The Tragically Hip are known to a generation of Canadians as artists that have never (wavered) in their commitment to quality and integrity. As investors, they will apply those same principles to Newstrike.”

Executive chairman Scott Kelly said the band’s involvement will help Newstrike build their brand and position themselves as the one Canadians choose once recreational marijuana is legalized. After all, “no one knows Canada and Canadians like the members of the Tragically Hip,” he said.

Canadian’s love for The Tragically Hip was re-ignited during their final tour across Canada last year and the outpouring of support for lead singer Gord Downie who is dying of terminal brain cancer.

Newstrike Resources Ltd. will go public on Thursday and will trade under the symbol HIP on the TSX.
