Tim Hortons to Expand into Mexico

The Canadian chain is making moves south of the border.

If you're looking for an iced cappuccino during your next trip to Cancun, you may be in luck. Famous Canadian restaurant chain, Tim Hortons, will now be setting up locations in Mexico. The popular coffee shop has announced a partnership with Latin American investors, who will bring the iconic Canadian franchise south of the border. This will be another foreign expansion for the brand, and comes after previous entries into the Middle East and the United Kingdom. In a statement made to the press this morning, CEO Daniel Schwartz seems to believe that the move is a natural next step. “Mexico has a thriving coffee market, so we are very optimistic about the opportunity to grow the brand across the country.”

Since opening its very first restaurant back in 1964, Tim Hortons has grown to an impressive 4,400 locations around the world. The Canadian giant has become an established part of the country's morning ritual, putting double doubles in the hands of millions of customers nationwide. According to the Associated Press, roughly 75% of the coffee bought at fast food chains in Canada, is purchased at Tim Hortons. In Mexico, the chain would have to compete with Starbucks, who have been in the nation for almost fifteen years. Tim Hortons will have their work cut out for them - as of 2015, Starbucks currently operates 500 Mexican locations.

There has yet to be an official word as to when Mexico will receive its first Tim Hortons. For more on the matter, and when you can snag a birthday cake timbit in Monterrey, stay locked to Complex CA.
