UPDATED 8/15/16 7:30 a.m.:
JFK International Airport was evacuated on Sunday night shortly after 9:30 p.m. following reports of gunfire inside Terminal 8 of the airport, but a search of all JFK’s terminals was conducted a short time later and an investigation found no evidence of a shooting in any of them. Chief Harry J. Wedin, NYPD Chief of Special Operations, gave the all clear just after midnight on Monday.
According to NBC News, it appears as though the loud noises that were interpreted as gunshots by those inside of JFK Airport may have actually been people "clapping and banging" while watching Usain Bolt’s 100-meter race at the Rio Olympics. All flight operations at JFK have returned to normal as of Monday morning.
