Donald Trump Jr. was accused of recycling language from a magazine article in his RNC speech, but the author was also reportedly Trump Jr.’s speechwriter.

One day after a plagiarism scandal rocked the first night of the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump Jr.'s speech at the RNC on Tuesday stirred up controversy when it was discovered that a portion of his speech was borrowed from a May 2016 article in The American Conservative

After the similarities were picked up, reporters were comparing the similarities to Melania Trump's borrowings from Michelle Obama the previous night.

Wait, another Trump plagiarism scandal? https://t.co/8xAC5QZOek

However, F.H. Buckley, who wrote the article in question, told Talking Points Memo that he also wrote for Trump Jr. "I was a principal speechwriter for the speech," he told the site. "So it's not an issue."

Correction: The AmCon writer also wrote Trump Jr.'s speech. So recycling rather than plagiarism https://t.co/E55gEYGGLj

Buckley also weighed in on Twitter, denying that the re-use of his words was "stealing."

So, Trump Jr. speech isn't plagiarism, just unbelievably sloppy speechwriting? Well, okay.
"He'll surround himself with the best talent."

Once the authorship issue was cleared up, many still remained critical of Trump Jr. for relying on already-published words in such a high-profile talk, characterizing it as "sloppy" and "unprofessional."

I find the concept of "self-plagiarism" dubious but it is true a professional speech writer shouldn't do this. https://t.co/VnAkP43pwO

Second, of all this is extraordinarily lazy. Of Buckley and the campaign. Really? For a speech like this, you're going to re-use old stuff?

It's quite amazing that Buckley would admit he recycled material for one of the biggest speeches at the RNC. Especially after last night.
