Stephen Hawking knows many things. Earlier this year, he let us in on a little secret: The next 100 years here on Earth are going to be pretty brutal. Shortly after that oddly comforting revelation, dude hit up noted ant-lover Paul Rudd for a quick round of "Quantum Chess." Simply put, Hawking knows his sh*t. However, as the theoretical physicist revealed in an interview with ITV's Good Morning Britain Tuesday, there's one thing even he can’t explain: the rise of presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.
"I can't," Hawking said when asked to explain Trump's domination of the GOP party. "[Trump] is a demagogue who seems to appeal to the lowest common denominator."
But the outspoken cosmologist, who also used the interview to urge British voters to decide to stay in the European Union, isn't the only prominent intellectual speaking out in protest of the current GOP establishment. Back in January, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor and noted author Noam Chomsky dubbed Republicans a "serious danger" to the survival of humans.
"The Republican Party has drifted off the rails," Chomsky told the Huffington Post. "It's become what the respected conservative political analysts Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein call 'a radical insurgency' that has pretty much abandoned parliamentary politics."
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to Complex's request for comment.
