Well first of all, it’s actually spelled “Kewba.” No. It’s definitely not. But similarly outrageous myths and common misconceptions regarding the island nation amongst its American neighbors persist, despite political relations improving. To be fair the United States’ relationship with Cuba has been heated in the past—like atomically hot. Nothing like the threat of a nuclear catastrophe to jade people’s perceptions. And of course there’s the old C-word. Hint: it’s not four letters and it rhymes with tommunism. However, Cuba is far from the hostile, anti-American place that some of us old enough to remember read about in history books. It’s time to get to know Cuba en verdad.
