“Super Mario 3D World” Debuts To “3D” Series Lowest Sales

Nintendo may have a problem. Super Mario 3D World, the Wii U’s big holiday title, has sold just under 100,000 units its debut week in Japan. Compare that 99,600 to Super Mario Galaxy’s first week sales (256,000) and Galaxy 2’s (337,000). Even Mario Sunshine sold 280,000 copies its first week out back in 2002.

Sales for the Wii U continue to flag – the console’s projected lifetime sales were just lowered to 25 million or less – although with Black Friday and the holidays coming, it’s possible that Nintendo might see a slight boost in its Wii U customer base. But if Japan isn’t buying Mario 3D World and next-gen systems making their presence known, it could spell real trouble for Nintendo’s potential to continue in the home console market.
