The Virtual Boy is Nintendo's illegitimate love child that has been unceremoniously swept under Bowser's castle, never to be mentioned again.
The pilloried console was an innovative, but ultimately overreaching, attempt by Nintendo to combine two quintessential components of 1990s zeitgeist: their wildly profitable Game Boy system and the nascent realm of virtual reality. The result was the Virtual Boy. A migraine inducing console that rendered all games for the systems in a piercing red, three dimensional plane. The result was somewhere between being trapped on a nuclear submarine running silent and having an inner ear infection. The console was soon forgotten.
BUT! Savvy hackers have gone out of their way to create this phenomenal homebrew. Taking the Capcom classic Street Fighter II and porting it to the Virtual Boy, the creators over at Retro Collect have created Hyper Fighting. Take a look at the video to see the homebrew in all of its tanning bed/darkroom developer neon red.
