The 50 Greatest Mario Games

Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988)

Super Mario Bros. 3 is regarded by many as the quintessential 2D Mario game. It perfected what was begun in Super Mario Bros., and marked an important return-to-form for a series that went astray, if not in quality then at least in style, with what we in America know as Super Mario Bros. 2.

With perfect controls, level design and power-ups, and just enough mystery for players to know that there was more in the game's world than initially met the eye, Super Mario Bros. 3 consumed many a childhood summer all by itself, and for good reason. And the GBA remake, Super Mario Advance 4, dressed up its relatively simplistic NES-era visuals with a 16-bit coat of paint, making its world even more vibrant.
