Guess Which Valve Product is at the Heart of an Upcoming Feature Film

When we hear that a Valve product will be at the heart of an honest-to-goodness Hollywood sci-fi film, we get a little bit excited. unfortunately, that product is the company's Source engine, and not Portal, Left 4 Dead, Half-Life, or even Team Fortress 2.

Well that's sort of disappointing.

At least the movie sounds intriguing. Directed by Shane Acker, Deep is a post-apocalyptic tale about humanity's struggles to survive at the bottom of the ocean after World War III.

Apparently it has a tiny budget ($19 million or so), and licensing the same tech used by Pixar and such is expensive. And the animators at Brown Bag Films have reportedly worked with Valve before. So instead they use Valve's Source engine and we get to see what its real-time rendering, editing, character animation and lighting tools are capable of.

Do you think the Source engine can power an entire animated film? What do you think of the concept of Deep? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter.
