"Mortal Kombat" Vita Adds Touch Controls for Fatalities

After confirming that the newest Mortal Kombat is being ported to the PS Vita yesterday, series creator Ed Boon spoke with the PlayStation blog about some of the ways that the game would take advantage of the upcoming console's unique console scheme.

First and foremost, Boon said that players will be able to use the touch screen to perform fatalaities and X-Ray attacks. Other Vita fighting games like Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 have included similar options, which allow player to do complex attacks by touch.

"In terms of gameplay, we’ve always wanted MK to be as accessible as possible. For example, you can touch your X-ray meter to execute an X-ray attack. For fatalities, you can “slash” the screen with the appropriate inputs — say, away, away, up — to execute the fatality. It makes some of the more difficult fatalities easier and it’s fun to slash at your screen to fire off a fatality. I was surprised by how engaging it is."

Boon also teased that the Challenge Tower mode will include some tests unique to the Vita, including two new "Test Your Might" variants, which he didn't reveal.

Boon also discussed two potential Vita-centric options that his team didn't end up pursuing: First, the game will not use the Vita's rear touch screen in any way. Second, Boon said that there won't be any way to connect Mortal Kombat on the Vita with the PS3 version.

Still, it looks like the Vita version of Mortal Kombat will be a different experience than playing on a home console, given all of the mechanical changes. MK Vita is coming out some time this spring.
