Interview: Felicia Day Goes Virtual in Vegas for CES 2012

Interview: Felicia Day Goes Virtual in Vegas for CES 2012

Complex: What’s it like to be at CES 2012?

Felicia Day: All the gadget stuff is very exciting. And I’m here actually for the IWTB awards, which is celebrating the best of Web video.

Between The Guild and Dragon Age I have 13 nominations, which is very exciting. So it’s kind of celebration for me and my crew to get to the floor seeing cool dudes.

You’re like the James Cameron of that award show with all those nominations.

I’ve very lucky. We worked very hard last year and it’s very nice to have crew members recognized for a production, everything from make-up to acting to directing. Everybody is being honored and I’m very, very happy about that.

What was it like crossing mediums with your character from Dragon Age II?

With Dragon Age: Redemption I did that as a Web series and created the character. Then Bioware took the character and made a DLC called Dragon Age II: Mark of the Assassin.  So you can literally see my back story and my character in the videos and the game.

And you can see the character that I’m playing in virtual reality in the DLC, which I think is the first time that’s been done. It was a special experience for me because I’m a huge Bioware fan. I cannot wait for Mass Effect 3. I know this has nothing to with CES, but whatever. Mass Effect 3, we’re meant to be together.

What have you been playing lately?

I’ve been playing Skyrim. I know I want to play Star Wars: The Old Republic because I loved those Knights of the Old Republic games, but Skyrim is just amazing. I am an obsessive quester.  So I mean I will do every quest. Every single one.

I just finished all the games and I got a 24  stones – perks. I’m pretty obsessive about it. I have everything in my house sorted. I have gems barrels and alchemy barrels. I have skilled everything up in the game.

When are you actually going to break open Star Wars: The Old Republic and get into that?

I mean I want to, but then I heard Diablo 3 is coming out. So I don’t know. It’s hard because I’m also doing a new slate of shows for YouTube. It’s one of their premium channels. I’m very lucky to be able to make a bunch of shows, so I’m shooting full-time on many shows. So priorities are already making gaming hard.

Will those shows focus on the video game realm at all?

I’m not really talking about my shows right because we’re a while away from launch, but if you know what I’ve done and you like what I’ve done in the past, you’ll like these shows.

Have you been able to check out any cool gadgets at CES?

Yeah. I’m always a camera nerd, so I’m excited about the big Wi-Fi cameras, especially. I think that’s really cool and something that people want. So I always do that. It’s exciting.

I heard the new MakerBot and I’m excited because I wanted to get the old one but I heard the new one is cheaper and cooler.

What are your thoughts on all the new tablets we’re seeing out there?

I think it’s really cool. I have a tiny little Apple 11-inch Air and I think that all computers are going to be that small and have the touch screen stuff. I’m just waiting for one that’s going to take the iPad – whether it’s a PC or Mac – and is built so I can have the best of both worlds.

I have an iPad and I have an Alienware laptop and I also have an Apple laptop. I would love these three things in one package. I also heard a rumor of a new Xbox, so hopefully it will happen soon because I love my Xbox.

2014 is what I keep hearing when it comes to the next consoles.

2014?

Two more years of Skyrim for you.

I could probably do that.

What are your thoughts about 3D and gaming?

I mean I’m sure that’s what is happening. I personally wear glasses. I can’t really see your face that well, so I don’t like 3D movies. I have seen the NVIDIA 3D Vision cards and it’s pretty amazing, but wearing glasses when you’re already wearing glasses is a little bit of a pain. And then I heard a rumor that you get cancer if you watch it natively.

That’s something that I’ll wait to jump into until it’s really more of a mind. I mean, clearly, in 20 years that’s what we’re going to see. Everything’s going to be like wireless, virtual, 3D, everything. I mean that’s the world. So I love gadgets. I’m excited to see what they have, but I’m not going to buy anything for a while.
