Shortly after news broke out that Facebook dropped billions on WhatsApp, a rumor started to spread that the company had outbid Google's attempt to buy the app for $10 billion.

Google's now saying that rumor is untrue. “We never made an offer to acquire them," said Google Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai while at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. "Press reports to the contrary are simply untrue.” Though he admitted, "Whatsapp was definitely an exciting product." Was an exciting product.

One of the first iterations of the Google rumor was that WhatsApp had agreed to let Google know if any other company had inquired about buying them out, and that Google had placed a $10 billion bid on them in case the scenario came about. True or untrue, it didn't end up in Google's hands.
