40. Apple Shuts Down the Mac Clones

Year: 1997

The Mac OS was never meant to be licensed. Steve Jobs wanted to control the hardware and software; it was the only way to make the experience whole, he thought. When he left, Apple decided to veer away from that mandate and license out the OS to third-party vendors. When Steve came back he promptly shut down the program, refusing to renew contracts to allow companies to build computers with its System 8 software. No free lunches around here.
