Despite claims of its waning influence and shaky financials, Facebook continues to charge forward. The world's largest social network today announced that it has hit the one billion user mark.
Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement this morning via a short posting on the company's blog.
"If you're reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you," said Zuckerberg. "Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life."
To give the number some context, if Facebook was a country, it would be the third most populated behind China and India.
Despite this milestone, Facebook still has some hurdles to overcome, such as convincing companies that it's a worthwhile advertising medium. To help in that arena, it's recently partnered with DataLogix, a company that analyzes consumer retail habits, to prove that ads don't have to be clicked by users to be effective.
That partnership, however, also opened up privacy concerns. Another area in which Facebook is constantly evolving. But according to Zuckerberg, he's up for the challenge.
"I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too."
