L.A. Restaurant Gives Discount to Customers Who Don't Use Their Cell Phones

It's not uncommon to go to a restaurant and see a table of friends all looking down at their cell phones as opposed to engaging in conversation. Mark Gold doesn't believe that's how dinner should be experienced.

At his L.A.-based EVA Restaurant, Gold has instituted a new policy that will give diners a five percent discount on their checks if they opt to give up their cell phones for the night. If the patron obliges, their phone will be safely stored until they are ready to leave. Speaking to American Public Media, Gold explained:

“For us, it's the art of the lost conversation—how people don't converse anymore when they sit at the table. What you see now is a cell phone on the dining room table. We're trying to get away from that.”
