The Weinstein Company, the eponymous movie studio run by old Miramax heads Bob and Harvey Weinstein, will almost undoubtedly take a home a few Academy Awards this weekend for The Artist, My Week With Marilyn, or The Iron Lady. Cashing in on such Oscar buzz usually entails selling off the first-run television rights to the highest bidder, such as a HBO, Starz or Showtime.
Or Netflix. The streaming service seems to have made the right offer, locking in a multi-year deal with TWC to debut their future releases—beginning with The Artist—once TWC’s deal with Showtime ends. That means Tarantino’s Django Unchained will eventually make its way onto Netflix (after it finally hits theaters, of course). And yes, Piranha 3DD, as well.

While I’m sure these movies are great and it’s great that Netflix is adding to their selection, I think this could hardly be called progress. The most common complaint I hear and the reason why I left Netflix is because of their tiny streaming library. Netflix needs to get more content available for streaming or they will just keep losing customers. I have Blockbuster @Home through my employer, DISH, and just love it. I get all kinds of movies and even get new releases before Netflix does.
