First Dish Network and Blockbuster, then Verizon and Redbox, and now comes Comcast with a Netflix competitor of its own. The cable providers are really putting the screws to the pioneering web-based movie streamer, fighting to keep subscribers in the fold.
Streampix, the online video-on-demand (VOD) service that Comcast announced today will be offered for free to customers who subscribe to the company's "triple-play" cable, Internet and phone service. Customers who only get one or two of those services will be able to buy in to Streampix for just $4.99 per month.
Leveraging Comcast's relationships with the networks/movie studios, Streampix will offer back catalogs and current episodes of popular shows like 30 Rock, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost and The Office as well as hit movies like Brokeback Mountain, Ocean’s Eleven and The Big Lebowski.
Streampix will be available online and on the iPad at launch (as early as this week), with Android and Xbox 360 support coming later this year.
Just two weeks ago Verizon announced that it will be launching its own Netflix competitor this year in a partnership with Redbox.
