After having the rug pulled out from under them by Wednesday's widespread protests and blackouts, the controversial SOPA and PIPA bills have officially been pulled from consideration by both houses of congress.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced today that a scheduled procedural vote on PIPA, the senate version of the bill, has been postponed indefinitely. Meanwhile, House Judicial Committee Chairman Lamar Smith also removed SOPA, the house version, from the table "until there is wider agreement on a solution."
In a whirlwind 72 hours that began with blackouts and other online (and offline) protests on Wednesday, pro Internet freedom advocates succeeded in beating back the far-reaching anti-piracy bills, which had been championed by the entertainment industry.

I do not believe that these bills will go away so easy. I think they will linger while the actual push for their passing stops for a few weeks or months. I do believe, wholeheartedly, that they will surface again, and that in the meantime the makers of the bills will most likely work harder to gain more private support than they ever will to rewrite the content.
