With smartphones constantly improving their camera specs, the demand for stand-alone digital cameras will continue to wane. Polaroid, however, is looking to pioneer a niche market of smart cameras, swapping clunky UIs for mobile OS’s.
The 16-megapixel SC1630, announced at CES, runs Android and even looks like a smartphone in terms of shape and size. With Wi-Fi connectivity, users can upload pics straight away to Facebook and Twitter after they’ve had a chance to tweak them with the cam’s on-board editing suite. And because it also packs a mic and speaker, VOIP calling is possible over the Internet.
No word yet on pricing and availability.
