HP Extends WebOS A Lifeline, Makes It Open Source

After initially canceling webOS and ceasing production on all devices that ran the mobile software, HP today decided to revive it, turning the program over to the open source community.

"HP will make the underlying code of webOS available under an open source license. Developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers can deliver ongoing enhancements and new versions into the marketplace," the company said in a press release.

The news means that in the future, new devices running webOS made by a variety of manufacturers can make their way on to the market. Current owners of webOS-powered devices, meanwhile, can still look forward to refreshes and updates.

As an open source project, webOS could be positioned as an even more serious competitor to Android than it was under HP. Time for an under-appreciated software's second act.
