Fuel Cells Could Power Future Apple Devices

Apple has filed patents delineating the use of fuel cells, the technology that converts hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, in future Apple phones, tablets, and laptops. According to the patent applications, the devices would then be able to work for “weeks without refueling.”

Fuel cells are currently used in Honda’s FCX Clarity as a gas substitute with zero emissions. As for providing electricity, mobile device applications of fuel cells are not yet cost-effective or portable. However, Apple suggests the solution lies in a system “which is capable of both providing power to and receiving power from a rechargeable battery.”
