Research In Motion Nixes 2,000 Jobs

Barely a week since a mass-product unveiling that reeked of desperation, Blackberry manufacturers Research In Motion announced that they would be laying off 2,000 employees.

If that number doesn’t sound shocking enough, consider that 2,000 is 11 percent of RIM’s workforce. RIM announced that they will be contacting laid off employees this week.

Recently, the company faced public scrutiny for their awkward administrative setup, which featured dual-CEOs. That issue is being addressed alongside the massive downsizing, with Thorsten Heins moving into the role of C.O.O., Product and Sales.

But it is Product and Sales that seems to have been RIM’s Achilles heel, with most of the criticism of the company focusing on their inability to evolve product-wise.
